Confessions of a Wizkids SculptorJames Van Schaik is the longest working sculptor for Wizkids, working as far back as Infinity Challenge and as recent as the Brave and the Bold set. I sat down with James to get an idea of what he's done and how he got there.

The Le: Let's jump right in. So what sets did you work on, and which specific figures?

James: I have the honor of being the longest working sculptor on Heroclix although I took a years hiatus after ulimate. My earliest stuff was in Hypertime.

A) Infinity Challenge - Quicksilver

B) Hypertime - Checkmate agent, Lackey, Weather Wizard

C) Clobberin Time - Mandriod Armour, Aim Agent,

HEroClix Beast BatmanD) Xplosion - Con Artist, Hand Ninja's, The leader, Viper

N) Fantastic Four Starter Set - Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, The Thing, Dr. Doom

O) Arkham Asylum - Miss Martian, Nightshade, Amon Sur, Ghost fox Killer, Lyssa Drak, Saturn Queen, Clown Prince of Crime

P) Hammer of Thor - Daredevil, Beta Ray Bill, Loki, Loki Female, Valkryre on Aragron, Samatha Pennington, Songbird, Molly Hayes, Nico Minoru, Gert and old Lace, Karolina Dean, Gorrilla Man, Seth, Venus, Quasar- Phyla Kell, Kurse, Ultron, Phalanx Soldier, Pluto, Karnilla, Thorbuster Armour, Moondragon, Moonstone, Ronin the Accusor, Surtur, Enchantress

I have more in B&B but I can't really name those.

Whew! that took a long time! I had to go through the database on the realms to get them all.

The Le: Of the ones you worked on, which ones are you the most proud of?

James: It is hard to pick a favourite but I would have to say the Ultimate Hulk I did for Avengers is one of my all time favourites. The Batman from Worlds Finest also ranks up there. Storm, and Nightwing and Starfire I really liked as well. One of my favourites was Powerman and Iron fist but the production copy of that figure was altered from my original and I was really dissapointed by the finished product.

Actually many of my favourite and best work is in HOT and B&B so I can't mention them, that is why I was happy that they will finally be released.

I was really hoping you would get into the sculpting compounds he uses as well as more about how he actually sculpts the figure

James has always been one of my favorite Heroclix sculptors, even when his characters are standing still, they look dynamic. I am glad he did lots of figures for HoT.

"Who is the character on the last page here, the woman in the sci-fi snake-head battle armor?"

That would be Sister Bedlam from Pulp City, here is a link: http://pulpmonsters.com/heroes,41.html

Thanks for the comments.

Ah, now that I look at it more closely it's the World's Finest sculpt. Mea Culpa ;p

That looks like a new Batman in a Dark Knight look! Brave and the Bold already looks promising!

Wow, just wow. Some Awesome stuff man, and you're right, the manufacturing process definitely loses alot of the details. The only that struck me the most was looking at your superman holding supergirl. The differece is surprising. I look forward to seeing more in B&B.
